Herta Günther

(Dresden 1934 - 2018 ebenda)

Herta Günther observed people very closely. She often visited pubs and cafes. She drew from the everyday, depicted street and interior scenes. Usually a woman was the center of attention. One believes to know the sitter, feels connected to them, their looks nevertheless do not reveal everything, something mysterious surrounds them. Her pictorial worlds maintain distance without snubbing and entice with charm and mostly austere elegance. This polarity gives her works of art that unmistakable quality of expressing a distance of respect and self-respect with a light gesture. (E.W., H.D.)
