Paula Lauenstein's biography is typical of the generation of female artists who were finally allowed to study at art academies under the Weimar Constitution in 1919. Coming from a late Impressionist school strongly influenced by questions of form, she touched on the vitalism of the Expressive and encountered the New Objectivity, as Dresden developed into a center of New Objectivity painting in the 1920s.
